Helen Rodrigues Predicts Next Year’s Wedding Dress Trends

With New York Bridal Fashion Week behind us, we’re swooning over the latest wedding dress looks for Spring 2018! Look past the sea of white and lace and take notice of the similarities between collections and there are definitely some noticeable trends. We spoke with the founder of Australia’s luxury bridal boutique, Helen Rodrigues Bridal, to get her predictions on the biggest trends for 2018. See the latest collections from Helen Rodrigues on the runway next Monday at our 2017 Wedding Showcase with inspiring designs from international labels, Inbal Dror, Avon Livne, Monique Lhuillier – plus accessories from Karen Wolf and Jennifer Behr.

Trend One: Fuller Skirts

Although we are not seeing the absence of the fitted styles in Fall 2018, there was a definite strong presence of the fuller skirts, whether it be an a-line or a ballgown. This trend marries in perfectly with the romantic and floral applique trends to make it a real Cinderella moment for brides. These gowns are for that bride who wants that once in a lifetime gown for her special day and the fuller skirt works so beautifully in a variety of venues and wedding styles – whether it’s in a cathedral or in a vineyard the fuller skirts just work wonderfully.

Trend Two: Clean Lines

We have seen a lot of the more elaborate, embellished lines in past seasons and it was refreshing to see the revert back to the clean simple lines as shown by Monique Lhuillier and Alexandra Grecco for the Fall 2018 gowns. Whether they’re the classic womanly mermaid fit and flare lines or the more angular a-line traditional lines, they are truly beautiful and make for a striking silhouette.

Trend Three: Romantic

This revert back to the more romantic theme is a beautiful turn we have been noticing since the October 2016 Market. We are noticing a turn away from the sexy gowns that are extremely revealing and they’re going back to a lot softer, feminine romantic look as seen again by designer such as Monique Lhuillier. The use of soft tulles and lace shines through in this trend.

Trend Four: Floral Applique

Following on from the Romantic trend we’re seeing, the use of floral applique was ubiquitous for the Fall 2018 collections. This ties in so beautifully against the clean lines and romance of what’s coming through for next season. This use of floral applique transforms gowns in the most gorgeous way and really takes them to the next level whether in just the use of the re-embroidered lace or with some sparkle through it, it’s a beautiful addition to these stunning gowns.

Trend Five: Capes & Capelets

Nearly all designers at NYBFW showed at least one look that was accessorised with either a full-length cape or a cool cropped capelet. This provides the opportunity for different looks and a sense of drama on your wedding day.

Trend Six: Not White

Over the past few seasons we have noticed a strong use of the blush/nude/champagne tones which we are now noticing being replaced by striking blues and mints. This epitomises the modern bride who is not afraid of a bit of colour in her wedding gown and we are very excited about a a fresh tonal palette for Fall 2018. It encapsulates the old tradition of something blue.

Trend Seven: Pantsuits

Pantsuits certainly donned many catwalks during NYBFW. Peter Langner, Jenny Packham, Naeem Khan, Alexandra Grecco included. I have a stunning bride wearing an Elie Saab pantsuit and veil for her wedding later this year!
